When visiting Hong Kong, you will find a busy and vibrant capital. This city, which is also a country, has over 7 million people scattered throughout its more than 200 islands. In 1997 Hong Kong was officially handed back to China, but it still has its government and currency. The rich diversity in culture, lifestyle, and religion makes it an exciting and popular tourist destination.
The unique and energetic vibe that Hong Kong is famous for also offers intriguing food and a beautiful skyline, making it the ultimate city for a layover, sightseeing, shopping, or just relaxing. With an abundance of things to experience, comfortable walking shoes are a must. Loose clothing is also recommended during the humid and hot summer months, which can be uncomfortably hot.
Getting around Hong Kong is uncomplicated. The well-organised public transport system makes it possible to experience Hong Kong using the bus, tram, or Mass Transit Railway (MTR). Opting for a taxi is a bit more expensive than public transport but is readily available.
The great upscale shopping districts of Hong Kong resemble the high-end streets of shopping meccas such as Shangai, Paris, and London. However, the best places to shop are the small shops that line the roads and street markets that exhibit the locality’s charm and uniqueness.
Before buying anything, it is good to browse through the various stores to first compare prices before buying. Bargaining is a must except for prices that are fixed in the very local Chinese markets.
